Guide for New Members

(Instituted 1858)
A Guide for New Members
The object of Dundee Choral Union shall be the practice and performance, in public or in private of choral and orchestral music of an accepted high standard.

1. Subscription

This is fixed annually and should be paid to the Treasurer NO LATER THAN 30 September. The present rate is £96 and members are encouraged where possible to pay by the Charities Aid Scheme (formerly Deed of Covenant). Full-time students and School-children are admitted free of charge, but neither students nor school-children may vote at meetings. The Subscription for January-March 2020 will be £48 plus the cost of music hire/buy.

2. Music

Members provide the music selected at their own expense, although, where possible, hired scores will be made available at normal rates. Members are expected to have their own copy of "Messiah.

3. Practices

Practices are taken by the Musical Director weekly from September to March on Monday evenings at 7.00pm prompt. Additional rehearsals may be held at the discretion of the Musical Director or Committee. In particular, the afternoon rehearsal on the Sunday of the concert is of high priority as this is the only one we have with the orchestra and soloists.

4. Absence

Active members may not be absent from two consecutive meetings without satisfactory explanation to the Committee via the General Secretary or Steward of the Chorus. Active members are bound to attend at least two-thirds of the appointed meetings for practice. The Committee may refuse any Active Member in breach of these rules permission to take part in concerts.

5. Leave of Absence

Any Active Member may apply to the Committee for one year's leave of absence through the General Secretary. This will only be granted ON PAYMENT OF THE CURRENT SUBSCRIPTION. No reaudition will be required on resumption of Active Membership.

6. Concerts

Works to be performed at concerts are selected by the Musical Director subject to the approval of the Committee. Arrangements for the concerts are made by the Concert Secretary and Assistant Concert Secretary, in conjunction with the Committee. There are normally two concerts per year (December and March).

7. Dress for Concerts

Ladies should wear full length plain black skirts and long-sleeved black blouses with collar. Gentlemen should wear dinner suits.

This precis is intended only as a guide. A full copy of the Constitution may be seen by prior arrangement with the General Secretary.
